NEW THREADS FOR STRENGTH AND FLEXIBILITY
Leah O’Rourke | Principal
Tapestries have threads in two directions. We could say that time runs lengthways. Back and forth across time we weave some sort of life story, using colours and textures chosen, or merely available to us.
But our resulting stories may not be strictly autobiographical because our minds constantly select and shape events as we go. (For reasons we’ll discuss), we become attached to seeing our past … and indeed our future in certain ways. Then we wear the identity that fits the story we’ve fashioned.
Day by day, what you do is who you become. (Heraclitus)
This notion is central to Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. You are not seeing life events as they truly are. Rather you see life events as your mind’s eye expects them to be!
And as we’re at it, who is this person behind your mind’s eye?
Can you remember who you were before the world told you who to be? (Bukowski)
People try hard to be happy, of course they do. And if they’re not happy, is there a solid reason for adding blame and shame? Can we agree to ditch all the self-downing and stop lowering ourselves into the black hole?
We have two lives and the second begins when we realise we only have one. (Confucius)
There’s a whole lot that isn’t fair in life. What do you want to do with that? What is helpful and unhelpful ….. privately in your mind, publicly in the world? I am here to help you take a fresh look at life’s complexity, and not resent that complexity. You can even see it as part of life’s beauty.
